There are three Adult Basic Education (ABE) program teachers at Alliance for Independence that are provided by the Polk County School Board.
The Adult Basic Education program for adults with developmental disabilities provides specialized educational courses of learning. Reading, writing, math, work-related skills, employability skills, computer skills and life skills are some of the many curriculum topics available. The intent is to enable the students to participate in work and community activities as independently as possible. Student performance standards are designed to meet the individual needs of students with a wide range of functioning ability.
Creative staff members of the ABE program continue to reach new and innovative teaching methods. Short attention spans, vision problems, comprehension or other functioning disabilities are individually recognized and overcome by utilizing slide presentations with large text, eye-catching graphics, audio/video options and hands on learning tools. Educational software and computer games are an intricate part of teaching and learning.
Some of the favorite learning experiences are internet and email activities, Wheel of Fortune which enhances spelling objectives and creating digital photos and burning them to disk.
The ABE teachers also conduct an annual Academic Fair that gives the students an opportunity to display their math and comprehension skills and puzzle building abilities, while also having the opportunity to participate in a spelling bee. All participants are recognized and ribbons are awarded to the top competitors.
